Tri-State Top Teams Advance

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Tri-State Conference completed the first round of their Conference postseason play and the top four seeds all advanced to the semifinals. Vassar College and Fairfield University essentially had byes as their opponents forfeited. Meanwhile Marist University defeated Columbia University convincingly 67-0 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute had a battle with Siena College but prevailed 29-5.

These results mean that Vassar College will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Fairfield University will host Marist University next weekend on Sunday November 2, 2025. The latter of these games will be something of a decider given that in regular season play the match ended 26-26.

There are also games scheduled for teams that did not win this weekend as the Tri-State set up consolation brackets. A look at the attachment will help every team understand the bracket they are to play in. Siena College will host The College of New Jersey while Columbia University will host Rutgers University in the Challenger bracket.

Fordham University will host Molloy University and Montclair State University will host Hofstra University in the Plate bracket.

SUNY-New Paltz would have traveled to Stony Brook to decide the Bowl bracket but the Stony Brook University team has been struck by injuries and with a small roster is not able to play this game.

Tri-State Men’s Division II Goes Down to the Wire

Poughkeepsie, NY – The final weekend of regular season play sees a number of teams still in contention for the 4 semi-final postseason spots. However, the waters are muddied on account of a game that was not played earlier this fall and the fact that the Fairfield University Men’s Developmental team does not advance to Conference postseason competition. The Stags have acquitted themselves admirably and look likely to finish either first or second but because the Fairfield program has a team in the Liberty Conference these players have a postseason pathway already in place.

If it is possible, the Stags might be able to play against the Tri-State Champion if and when they are knocked out of the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) postseason. This is not a certainty but the option will be entertained.

So, here is the picture for the 4 semifinal slots – USMMA, Kings Point will finish first or second and are assured of a home semifinal. The Academy plays Hofstra University this weekend, 10/26/25, and even a loss doesn’t hurt their semifinal slot. Kings Point has 27 points from 6 games. Fairfield also has 27 points from 6 games.

Hofstra University and SUNY-Maritime had to postpone their regular season game on account of bad weather. It is hoped that the game can be played next week but that may not be necessary if the mathematics dictate that it won’t change the standings. The game should be set up so that in the event that it needs to be played it can be.

If Hofstra lose to USMMA this Sunday and do not earn any bonus points then they will finish the season with 15 points and if they were to defeat Maritime and score a bonus point the maximum number of points the school could earn would be 20 points.

Maritime has 16 points after 5 games and this weekend plays SUNY-New Paltz. If the Privateers win and get maximum points they will have 21 points. A win over Hofstra could mean earning 4 or 5 more points to give them a total of 26 or 27 points. This would elevate them to second place in the Conference and a semifinal slot. (Remember Fairfield does not advance.)

Vassar College has 17 points after 6 games and the Brewers face Seton Hall who have 16 points. If the Vassar Men win and collect a bonus point then they will finish the season with 22 points. If Seton Hall wins with a bonus point they will finish with 21 points. Of course, either team could win and not earn a bonus point giving Vassar 21 points or Seton Hall 20 points.

Confused? Don’t be because there is more to consider!

If Hofstra was to beat USMMA and earn either 4 or 5 points then the game against Maritime becomes a major factor. Hofstra would have 19 or 20 points and a win over Maritime would give them 23 or 24 points.

If Maritime slips up against New Paltz and either lose or tie, the Privateers would have 16, 17 or 18 points with just the Hofstra game to play. A win over Hofstra would give them 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 or 23 points.

Just to spice matters up a tad more there is the home field issue as the top 2 are scheduled to be at home as long as their field is championship standard.

All pretty clear huh? I guess that’s why we play sports!

Sunday night will see USMMA, Fairfield, Vassar, Seton Hall, New Paltz and Montclair State with final regular season totals. The question that will then be asked is, does the Hofstra v Maritime game even need to be played?

Sincerely,

Tony Brown

Subject: 2026 All-Star Weekend Info – Jan 24–26, Atlanta

Dear Commissioners,

I’m excited to share updates on our 2026 All-Star Weekend, which will take place January 24–26, 2026 at Silverbacks Stadium in Atlanta. Please see below for key details:

Competition Format Updates

  • Sevens: Each conference will be able to opt in as normal.
    • Fifteens: This year we are adding a new fifteens component, with four 15s teams carrying players selected from across the country, giving 100 players the opportunity to play fifteens during the event.
  • I will be appointing 15s coaches soon, but if you have nominations, please send them my way.
  • To make room for fifteens, the Rising Stars All-Star division was cut this year.

Coach Development

  • A Coach Development Workshop will take place in the afternoon on Friday, January 24.
  • All coaches are invited to join and participating coaches will need to arrive by midday Friday.

Player Nominations

  • Please use this form to nominate players by November 1, 2025:  https://forms.gle/R3kBdLH67GvXrYVh7
  • After November 1, Players will have one week to accept their nomination and choose between fifteens, sevens, or to decline.
  • The players who accept the 15s nomination will be drafted by one of the four 15s coaches. Any players who are not drafted will still be eligible to play 7s for their conference if the conference coaches select them.
  • Players will only be eligible to play in one format and cannot play both 15s and 7s during All-Star Weekend.

Other Logistics:

  • Schedule: Check in and development/social opportunities will be on Friday January 24th in the afternoon/evening. Games will be January 25th and 26th.
  • Kit Orders: All teams will need to order kit through Paladin, with support from Kelsea Thompson (kelsea@ncr.rugby)
  • Vendors: We are exploring on-the-ground tour and logistics partners – more to come soon.
  • Media: Teams are welcome to bring their own photographer/videographer. Please connect them with Sophia (sophia@ncr.rugby) by January 1, 2026.
  • High Performance: All-Star 15s and 7s will serve as a scouting event for the future high performance tours and opportunities

We’re excited to expand development opportunities for both players and coaches, and I appreciate your help in making this event successful. There is plenty more information and updates to come, but please use this to start your planning and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Thanks for your time!

9/13 & 9/14, 2025

The Fall 2025 Season commenced this past weekend with some games being played in the Tri-State area.

The Fairfield University Men’s Developmental XV took on Conference Champions USMMA, Kings Point and in what has been described as a phenomenal game the Connecticut scholl edged the result 26-24. Elsewhere the Vassar College Men traveled to SUNY-New Paltz and against an inexperienced team the Brewers triumphed 66-3.  Meanwhile Seton Hall University Men went to Hofstra University and fell by a score of 48-22 with both teams earning a 4-tries bonus point.

On the women’s side of events the Vassar College Women played Syracuse University Women in Poughkeepsie, a cross conference game with the 2-time defending Upstate New York Conference Champions Syracuse falling to the defending NCR and Tri-State Champions 58-5. In earlier action the previous weekend the Fairfield University Women defeated the US Coast Guard Academy Women 38-14. Meanwhile in a preseason game Siena College Women defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Women 31-12.

Saturday August 30th, 2025

The 2025-26 Rugby Season is about to commence and it’s an exciting time for all with the Women’s World Cup in England playing second pool games today, the Rugby Championship in round 3 in the southern hemisphere, and northern hemisphere club games starting up.

In the Tri-State Conference teams will start play September 13th and the regular season will continue until the end of October followed by Conference playoffs and then postseason regional competition and the Fall National Championship sponsored by  National Collegiate Rugby (NCR).

Each team needs to get a few tasks done right now in order to be able to play.

  1. Register your club with NCR;
  2. Register players with NCR (each player must do this as it involves signing waivers);
  3. Update your match secretary contact information on MatchFacts (the referee assignment website)

There are 2 websites that can assist you in doing these tasks:

https://www.ncr.rugby/

https://www.matchfacts.app/

You can book 15-minute appointments with NCR and this may help you get tasks done in a timely manner.

In addition the Tri-State Conference website has information that addresses administration needs and you should also make sure that your team contact information is up to date. Just go to:

https://www.tristaterugby.com/

Once your team, coach and players are registered you need to remember to contact your home game referees and provide details such as venue address, team colors, payment procedure, kick-off time and then get confirmation from the referee that he or she can do the game.

Please get on the registration tasks today so that your team is eligible for the 2025-26 season.

Thank you for your time and attention to these matters.

Sincerely,

Tony Brown
