SPRING SEVENS SCHEDULE SET

Tri-State Conference Agrees 7s Schedule for Spring 2022 (Schedule shown below)

In an effort to rebuild team rosters by attracting new players to the sport the Tri-State Conference for the first time has placed a significant emphasis on the Seven-a-side game this Spring. On three consecutive weekends teams in the Conference will play 4 or 5 team round-robin tournaments.

Covid-19 led to a lost year an a half of rugby games and most team rosters were depleted. This led to some cancellations of games in the Fall and so in an effort to ensure players get playing experience it was thought that 7s events would be a good option. By scheduling 4 teams at a single venue there are a number of benefits: 1. If a team is not able to play because of Covid cases or restrictions on travel, then the other teams will still get to play; 2. A team only needs 7-12 players as opposed to 15-23; 3. The game itself has less components to coach than 15s so newcomers can quickly participate; 4. The games are short and with the emphasis on open field running and passing it’s a lot of fun; 5. Each event can start at 12:00 noon and be completed by 4:00 pm with each team having an A & B side entered and this means that it’s pretty much the same as a regular 15s game in the Fall when there is an A & B game. 6. The events will use Society Referees as well as trainee referees from each participating team and it is hoped that these trainees will get a taste of refereeing and eventually join the society.

The Covid-19 situation with the Omicron variant spreading may cause disruption but we have in place a schedule that we hope to implement. School administrators will make decisions re: hosting and participation and the Conference will obviously defer to their policies and judgement.

Spring 7s Discussion

To: All Tri-State Conference Teams
Re: Sevens Spring 2022
Monday January 3, 2022
The New Year has arrived and I trust that everyone has had an enjoyable holiday period and is excited for the Spring 2022 Rugby Season.
I have been working on a Conference 7s Schedule for this Spring and now I need to get your feedback and a commitment from all the teams.
In a previous e-mail I outlined the idea of mini-7s tournaments and requested details of each school’s spring break and possible 15s games. I want to lock in these 7s events and get all the additional game information from each school asap. Hopefully, we will be able to proceed with this schedule – Covid allowing!
The Spring Season is a short one for all of us, usually on account of the winter weather. Although some teams schedule games in early March often snow or frozen ground cause cancellations. We not only have to take into account Spring Breaks but also Easter, the Beast of the East Tournament, National 7s Championships, Exams and Graduation.
From the perspective of Referees this Spring 7s format could be a win-win situation. Having 4 or 5 teams at one venue playing 7s, while still only covering a time period of a usual A & B game, will not mean more referees are needed. We also will have the opportunity to get coaches and players some refereeing experience and mentorship.
I am going to propose that the payment for referees for these 7s events be covered by the Conference and I will work with RRSNY & NYRRS to come up with a fair figure.
To prepare for the discussion this week on Zoom please take a look at the details of the proposed 7s events – see attachment sent to Club Officers in an e-mail today (1/3/2022).
Please know that the discussion may include any changes that need to be made, i.e. perhaps we move some teams to different events or switch a date or a start time. In addition, we will discuss details of how to run these mini-7s tournaments with hopefully 2 certified RRSNY or NYRRS Referees together with coaches and trainee referees.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at my cell phone number 845-380-9052 or by e-mail.
I will send out Zoom Meeting details later today for a meeting to be held this week.
As ever, I want to thank each and every one of you for helping to make this rugby season happen. Your input and time is truly appreciated as you work to help your students or teammates compete each weekend representing their school.
Thank you.
Tony
Sincerely,

Tony Brown

Happy Holidays, AGM & Coaching Clinic

To: All Tri-State Collegiate Rugby Conference Teams

Date: Friday December 24th, 2021

Dear Tri-State Administrators, Coaches, Players, Referees, Family and Friends,

While the past 18 months have been difficult as we have all had to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic you have prevailed!

So at this time of year when we reflect on the events and people in our lives please remember that we have practiced with masks, been socially distanced, returned to play and pieced together a Rugby season. So thank you all for your exceptional efforts and continued involvement.

Please note that in 2022 we will put together a 7s Season for teams like no other in an effort to rebuild our rosters. We will discuss this in great detail at the Zoom AGM that will be scheduled in January 2022, details to follow.

Also mark Sunday February 27th, 2022 on your calendar as we are planning on hosting a Coaching Clinic, a Referee Clinic and a Strength & Conditioning Clinic at SUNY-Maritime College – confirmation and details to follow.

Thank you all again and I hope you have a happy holiday season and all the best for 2022.

Fall Season 2021

To: All Tri-State Conference Rugby Teams

Re: Fall Season 2021

Date: November 1, 2021

Regular Season

The Fall 2021 regular season has come to a close save for the Men’s Division III who have one more weekend of play. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the administrators, team leaders and players for making their best effort each week to work with other teams and play as much of the schedule as was possible. The small rosters for teams, issues with transportation, Covid restrictions, a small pool of referees and the injuries sustained all contributed to problems yet for the most part we prevailed. Thank you one and all.

Post-season

The Tri-State Conference is now entering the post season and that means a few teams will advance to the Conference finals and regional play. It is important that you get with your school academic registrar and complete the eligibility paperwork. (Blank form attached). I would encourage those involved in the post season to go to the Tri-State Conference website, the ACRA website and the NCR website for pertinent details regarding playoff brackets and venues. ( https:/tristaterugby.org, https://www.acrarugby.org, https://www.ncrugby.org ) {Women’s Division II ACRA brackets

Additional games

It has come to my attention that some teams are wanting to add games to their schedule now that conference play has concluded. However, There is a severe shortage of referees and we need to be considerate of the burden we are putting on these officials. Please do not schedule games independently with another school or club and then seek a referee. You may request that a game be added to the schedule and to do so you will need to e-mail both the Conference and the Referee’s Society ( tobrown@vassar.edu, camille.juzwik@gmail.com ) But please understand that the game may not be played.

Coaches

This Fall has proven particularly challenging for teams with so many rookies on the field and there has been a tendency for coaches to go onto the field of play during games. Though understandable this is not permissible. Coaches need to remain on the touchline and I would ask that all take a few minutes to review the Coaches Code of Conduct that is on the Tri-State website. (The exception to this rule would be a medical emergency where the coach is a trained EMT, paramedic, ATC, physician or their presence is requested by medical personnel to assist an injured player.) Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and again a big thank you for making this Fall Season possible.

Sincerely,

Tony Brown

Tri-State Conference

Poughkeepsie, NY

Sunday October 3, 2021

Many Tri-State teams are still getting their rosters filled and are being allowed to participate by their school. Thank you to the Club Sport Directors and student administrators for working to make this season happen for the rugby players.

This past weekend saw the Fairfield University Women bounce back with a convincing win at U. at Albany. Stony Brook University Women proved much more competitive in their match up with an ever improving Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as the Engineers won 53-10.

In a close one at SUNY-New Paltz the hosts, New Paltz Women, may have gone down but in the process they earned 2 bonus points, one for losing by less than 7 and one for scoring 4 tries – Hofstra University Women 25 at SUNY-New Paltz Women 20.

Another close game was the RPI Men edging to victory over Seton Hall University Men. With WPU out of the picture and there only being the 4 teams in Division II results in the regular season will determine the seeding for the Conference Championship and all 4 teams advance. (N1 v N4 and N2 v N3).

In the Central Division, Hofstra Men finished with a 10 point margin over SUNY-Maritime College 34-24 while Vassar defeated SUNY-New Paltz 58-10. Oneonta Men had to forfeit against Drew and Montclair State had a bye and will be better prepared for next week.

In all twelve (12) games were played this weekend with 4 forfeits. Of those forfeits Columbia Women did play versus Rutgers Women scoring 50 points and Siena Women tied 10-10 with Montclair Women but then didn’t have enough players to finish the game.
